Hand-woven out of river reeds and adorned with leather dyed with natural pigments in colors of wine red and a black-brown. The patterns possess particular symbolism and meaning
Amongst the Tuareg, the men collect the skins and perform the tanning and dyeing, women carry out all of the fine cutting and elaborate detailing of the pieces; this applies to all objects whatever their size and purpose may be.
The tufts of leather on the backside of the mat would serve as additional padding of the mat for added comfort while used to sit on.
