The Tellem inhabited the Dogon cliffs prior to the Dogon and occupied structures in some very unattainable areas of the cliffs; their exact origins yet remain unknown.
The actual significance of the crouching gesture based on myth is unclear, but it is thought that figures in this sitting position may be showing respect and humbleness.
