Large Old Dogon Iron Resonant Ring Gong for Funerals-AFRICA
An old and ritually used Dogon iron resonant instrument ring. Made of hand-forged iron, the round shape and in a tapered end.
This instrument is used to initiate funeral ceremonies, and is worn by he who precedes the procession. It is a percussion element, wither struck with an iron ring that is worn on another finger, or with a metal rod.
The origin of the shape is unknown, but there is a certain organic quality to the exquisitely simple form and the delicately slit sides.
A piece of superb workmanship with notable patina of age and usage.
